Statement Carpet Styles For Your Renovation Project

When you’re renovating or flipping a home, there are a seemingly endless number of decisions to make. Paint colors, appliances, drawer pulls, bathroom fixtures, wall sconces, and so on and so on.

Carpet is no different. Carpets come in so many styles, textures, colors, materials, and patterns that it can be overwhelming — especially if it’s been a decade or more since you last bought carpet! But don’t worry, we’re here to help. Here are a few options to consider for your next big project.

Carpet or Hardwood Floors?

You’ll see a lot of people online saying that carpet’s day is done and that hardwood floors are the only way forward. But carpet offers some serious advantages over hardwood:

  • Cost: per square foot, carpet is half the price of hardwood floors or less, and that’s just for the materials. Installation of hardwood floors is a huge piece of the cost that you’ll have to take into account, too.
  • Ease of installation: a small crew can carpet an entire house in a weekend, including moving furniture around and cleaning out the old carpet. Hardwood often needs to sit in your home to acclimate for up to a week before you can even get started! Then the floor has to be leveled and prepped, each piece has to be installed individually, and the floor has to be cleaned and polished. The timescale isn’t feasible for a lot of homes.
  • Comfort: whether you have crawling kids, rowdy dogs, or just like to walk around in your bare feet, carpet is simply a more forgiving surface than hardwood. For a showroom, hardwood is fine — but carpet makes a house a home.

Berber Carpet — the Do-It-All Workhorse

If you don’t know what kind of carpet to install in a given home or room, you can’t go wrong with Berber. Berber is a type of closed-loop carpet, which means the yarns aren’t cut to expose the ends, making it dense and durable. Unlike some closed-loop options that have their loops in rows, Berber’s yarns are crisscrossed and overlapped to create a more unique, textured surface.

Berber carpet is soft and comfortable, but more durable and easier to clean than almost any other style. And with a factory-installed stain-resistant coating, it should stand up to even the most punishing use from kids, pets, and more.

Frieze — Modern Luxury with a Retro Flair

Shag carpet, just like your parents used to have, is making a comeback. But it still has its downsides. It’s soft and luxurious underfoot, but its long fibers trap stains and get tangled in vacuums, making it difficult to maintain.

Frieze is a perfect balance. The fibers of frieze carpet are long enough to lie flat, preventing fraying and increasing their longevity while providing unmatched comfort underfoot. At the same time, frieze carpet fibers aren’t so long that your vacuum can’t handle them, so with regular cleaning they should last as long as any other style.

Cut-and-Loop — Making a Statement

The uniqueness of cut-and-loop carpet is in the name! Some of the fibers are cut, while other are still in their looped configuration, creating depth, texture, and pattern that makes your carpet as much of an art piece as anything on your walls.

Some cut-and-loop patterns are simple stripes or geometric shapes, while some are more extravagant floral or multi-colored designs. If you want your flooring to stand out, cut-and-loop is the way to go.
