Remove Mud from your Carpet
Although summer is in the air in Colorado (and we couldn’t be more excited), we need to get through May. Since May has become one of our rainiest months over the past few years, this means you may find yourself with some muddy carpet on your hands. - Let the mud dry before attempting any cleaning. For those of us who see a stain and want to get rid of it immediately, this is probably the most difficult step in this process. Trust us: the stain will be so much easier to get rid of if you wait for the mud to dry before attempting to clean it.
- Now that the mud has dried, you will be able to scrape off the dirt that has not set into the carpet. There are a couple of ways to do this. You can use your hand and a hard brush—your hand by itself will be able to get some mud off, but that brush will make a huge difference. If you don’t have access to a hard brush, you can use a vacuum. Move the vacuum slowly over the affected area. With a mud stain, there is no such thing as too much vacuuming, so take your time and go over the spot in all directions until all that is left is the stain that has set into the carpet.
- To remove the stain, you will need a mild dishwashing detergent, lukewarm water, a cloth and possibly some white vinegar. You will mix one teaspoon of detergent with one cup of water—if you end up needing more, just use this ratio again. Blot the solution onto the stain using a cloth. The key here is blotting, as wiping will spread the stain rather than lift it! If you find that the stain is still there after the blotting process, you can then use white vinegar. Soak the stain and then blot it with a clean cloth immediately.
- Once you have removed the stain, pour lukewarm water onto the affected area to get rid of the chemicals and the smell of the vinegar. Blot this until dry or mostly dry.
