Knowing Your Flooring and Renovation Budget Can Be Key to Your Project

Once the holidays are behind us, most people go into belt-tightening mode. And while having (and sticking to) a budget is a great idea; you can still put off your home improvement projects. If you’re smart about it, you can freshen up your space and still maintain your budget.

If your New Year plans include more than just flooring, we’ve got some advice for that, too. Check out some tips for decorating on a budget.

Do the Math

Before you start thinking about new floors, there are two numbers you should have in mind. First, what is your budget for your flooring project, and how big of a flooring or renovation project can I afford? You can remove this stressor from your project with some advance work.

Not only do you need that budget number, but you should also ensure you’re not “over-improving” your home. For example, while you might want to install marble flooring throughout your home, you’d never see an ROI on that if your home is mid-range. Since your home value and specific improvements might vary, consult your realtor or sites like Zillow for the most accurate information. Realtors and flooring experts agree on two numbers around ROI. First, getting 50-75% of your investment back is a good rule of thumb for projects. And new flooring installed by an expert can bring you a 50-60% ROI, so it is worth it.

Carpet and LVP can be ideal for new floors in offices, rental properties and mid-range homes. You’ll get a fresh new look, and you won’t have to incur tens of thousands in costs. And you can learn more about LVP and carpet on Sloane’s Carpet Secret site.

Buyer Beware

While searching for the best deal, beware of bargains that seem ‘too good to be true.’ Some vendors will offer a lower-quality product, or you might face hidden costs. Make sure you know what you’re buying to avoid any surprise costs.

At Sloane’s Carpet Secret, we stock high-quality seconds and discontinued lines, but we don’t sell inferior-quality flooring, and we don’t skimp on service.

Do your flooring homework before buying. And if you ever have questions about your flooring project, you can always ask the team at Sloane’s Carpet Secret!

Is DIY Cheaper?

Only sometimes. You CAN save money by installing flooring on your own, but you’ll have to ensure you know what you’re doing. We work with many DIYers with excellent results. There can be downsides to DIY, too. For example, there could be costly repairs or replacements if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. This also adds stress and dollars to your project. Further, without a skilled tradesperson to help you troubleshoot, you’ll have no one to offer advice or assistance on your project.

Be sure to weigh the costs and savings of DIY before diving in. Our advice? Talk to our independent installation team before you start on a DIY project.

Look at your budget as something other than an obstacle. If you know your project and can spend within your budget, you will likely end up with a flooring project that fits your needs and doesn’t leave you with and spending hangover. And Sloane’s Carpet Secret can help you with just about any budget. Our team is ready to help, and we have millions of square feet of flooring in stock and ready for your project.
