Carpet & LVP Myths Debunked

As you’re shopping for new flooring, you’ve likely uncovered all sorts of information; some of it true, and some might be, well, not necessarily true. Carpet and flooring have evolved over the years, just like many things in your home or office. And just as flooring keeps up with trends, they have also improved on some functional aspects.

We’ve debunked a few myths about carpet and LVP, so while you’re searching for the right flooring, you can also have accurate information.

Carpet Myth #1: You can’t have carpet if you have allergies

This is not exactly true. While many allergy experts will say that hard surface floors are better for some allergy sufferers, it does not rule out carpets if you have allergies. Allergy sufferers and some experts point to a lower pile and synthetic fiber carpet as the solution. The pile in carpet can often trap allergens in their fibers, which is preferable to having those allergens in the air. And some synthetic fibers can actually “dry out” the allergens it encounters. Allergy sufferers should clean carpets regularly to eliminate allergy-causing elements, but carpets are not a definite ‘no-no’ for those who suffer from seasonal or airborne allergies.

Carpet Myth #2: Carpet is out of style.

Yes, some carpets ARE out of style – thinking of some funky avocado green shag! But just like any home décor trend, carpet styles have kept up. There are tons of styles of carpet that are just as stylish and modern as any hardwood or tile. Carpets come in a wide variety – natural fibers, textures, colors, etc. –  and can easily fit into your stylish home, rental or office. In fact, Home & Gardens thinks carpet is here to stay and is doing fine with keeping up with home décor trends.

Carpet Myth #3: Carpet requires so much more work to maintain

If you spill on a carpet, you must tend to it immediately. But if you also spilled on a hard surface floor, you’d clean that up immediately, too, right? Any flooring needs to be taken care of; that’s a fact. You’ll always need to keep floors clean and free from damage, or the floor’s life will be shortened. And while carpet is no exception, it doesn’t necessarily require more maintenance than any other flooring type.

While we’re wading through some misconceptions about carpet, let’s debunk some myths about LVP, too. We did our homework before offering LVP and are happy to tell you what we’ve learned.

LVP Myth #1: All vinyl flooring is the same

We often hear this and will tell you not all vinyl flooring is created equal. The LVP you’ll find at Sloane’s is not just a roll of linoleum or peel-and-stick tiles. We offer LVP with layers of solid flooring and a top layer in many styles. You can learn more about LVP and its benefits, but know this: this isn’t your grandma’s vinyl flooring. LVP has come a long way and has many features and benefits that could make it a smart choice for your home.

LVP Myth #2: It doesn’t look that great

That is not true at all. In recent years, LVP has made great strides in quality look and feel. LVP has dozens of styles; some even have textures to mimic hardwood. But the real bonus is in the durability. It keeps its look longer than some hardwood floors. Due to normal wear and tear, many natural hardwood floors are prone to chipping or scratching. A protective layer on top of LVP keeps your floors looking great. This could also save you down the road; they won’t have to be refinished like some hardwoods might.

LVP Myth #3: Good LVP is just as expensive as hardwood

We can’t imagine where this misconception came from; it is far from true. LVP – even at its most expensive – is a fraction of the cost of hardwood flooring. We did a little digging. On average, installation of hardwood floors (and associated materials) can run about $18 per square foot., So, if you were re-flooring your 2,000-square-foot home, that could be about $36,000. And according to our own inventory and Forbes Homes,  LVP is almost half of that and maybe less. Also, since LVP can be installed over your existing floors, you can save on demo costs (and time!).

All facts and myths aside, you must choose what is best for your lifestyle. The best flooring is one that will last and complement your lifestyle. Yes, you can have carpet, LVP, or both; many styles are available to highlight your other home design choices. You’ll have to do homework before you get caught up in what you’ve heard or long-held, and maybe incorrect beliefs.
