How to Avoid Wear on Your Carpet
One of the best feelings in the world is sinking your feet into new carpet. It always feels so soft and fluffy, and we wish it could stay that way forever. However, everyday wear greatly affects the feel of your carpet. While some wear is unavoidable, your friends at Sloane’s Carpet Secret have some tips to slow down the process and keep your carpet looking and feeling new for much longer!
What Causes Carpet Wear?
Dirt particles and foot traffic combine to create the root cause of most carpet wear. When people walk on the carpet, dirt particles are pushed into the carpet and they grind against the carpet fibers, wearing them down. Even if carpets are free of dirt particles, foot traffic on its own can cause wear, specifically where there is a transition from a hard surface to a carpet. In most homes an example would be from the bathroom to the hallway or the dining room to the living room. We tend to drag our feet when we transition from the hard surface to the soft.
How to Avoid Wear
Luckily, there are several steps you can take to avoid carpet wear. Combining some or all of these suggestions will greatly reduce the wear on your carpet!
- Vacuum regularly. Especially with kids and/or pets, it is very difficult to avoid tracking dirt into your home. Vacuuming regularly is the easiest and most effective way to remove those dirt particles. Make sure your vacuum bag is half-full or less and that the brushes are clean to ensure the most effective vacuum job. Even areas that are not visibly dirty are hiding dirt particles!
- Invest in a few throw rugs and door mats. In high-traffic areas, a throw rug can really help absorb some of the impact of consistent walking and also helps absorb the dirt particles. We recommend putting door mats by entrances to the house for people to wipe their feet on. Even if they don’t wipe their feet, just walking on the mat will remove some of the particles brought in from outside! A step further than this would be to ask people to remove their shoes before coming inside. This option does not appeal to everyone, but it works well for some families and does keep the carpet from collecting all of those grating particles.
- Get your carpets cleaned regularly. This means a cleaning at least once a year if not twice, which sounds like a pain, but it helps your carpet last longer and look and feel great! The typical cleaning process is a steam clean. Make sure your carpet cleaners are certified—this means they are professional and will perform the steam clean correctly and with chemicals that are safe for you and your family.
