2020 Shapes New Homebuying Trends

In addition to just about every other facet of work and life, the pandemic has left its mark on home buying trends in 2020. Kitchen and baths will always be important. But right now, buyers are looking for multifunctional spaces to accommodate more people living and working from home. If you’re thinking about selling, consider what’s topping wish lists in the time of Corona.

Office Space

Dad’s working from home three days a week. Mom’s working there full-time, as her employer has extended its remote working policy indefinitely. And then there’s two kids who are schooling from home, too. A dedicated private office is critical for online meetings and classes–maybe even more than one. Consider staging an extra bedroom as an office complete with new, Plush Pile to help with soundproofing. Many sellers are getting imaginative by staging large closets, lofts, sunrooms and backyard sheds with office equipment to add more versatility to their spaces. With its timeless looks and super durability, Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) would be a great flooring choice for any of these non-traditional offices that may evolve into another functional space post-pandemic.

Playroom and/or Workout Space

Some gyms and rec centers may have reopened, but that doesn’t mean people are comfortable in these high-touch spaces where heavy breathing is the norm. So, many homeowners are converting basements, garages and bedrooms into home gyms. Our water-, scratch- and dent-proof LVP is a no-brainer for these spaces. Another trend is using an extra room or part of a room for a kid’s play zone. Sloane’s carries a variety of durable, stain-resistant carpets that would easily stand up to kid’s play and still look gorgeous.

Flexible spaces for the expanding “Pod”

Take a cue from today’s homebuilders who are reimagining new floor plans. They’re including more flexible space for multigenerational living. Plus, they’re dedicating more space to kitchens and offices to meet buyers’ needs. There’s a shift away from the ever-popular open floor plan to include dedicated, private spaces. Kitchens must accommodate all those home-cooked meals with large pantries for food storage, lots of counter space, and a breakfast bar or industrial-size island for gathering and zooming.
