Tips for Refurbishing Furniture

At Sloane’s Carpet Secret, we understand that redecorating your home is exciting, but it can also become expensive very quickly. That is why we have incredible carpeting services that fit right into your budget, and we also give you tips every month for home decorating that won’t break the bank. Since buying brand new furniture can get pricey, these tips are all about refurbishing used furniture. You will be amazed by what you can do and how much you can save!

Where to Go

Denver’s thrift shop scene is thriving, which is exciting, but can also be overwhelming. For furniture, we recommend checking out your local Goodwill, Arc or Savers. Some of these stores have locations specifically for furniture! You should also check out Antique Row on South Broadway near I-25. Incredible antique shops are housed in Denver’s historic buildings, such as the old Ford Motor Company. This area showcases Denver’s history and also offers an amazing thrift shopping experience!

What You Need for Refurbishing Furniture

So, you have your furniture. Now what? Make sure you have all of your supplies beforehand. Before going out to get these supplies, inspect your furniture for damages.

  • If there are cracks or dents in your wooden furniture items, go ahead and pick up some wood putty or filler. Getting your supplies beforehand also requires you to think about what you want to do with your furniture, which is good. You will be working hard, so it is important to make sure that you refurbish the furniture in a way you really like and in a way that fits with the décor of your space.
  • If you want to resurface a piece of wooden furniture, you will need sandpaper and stain or paint (and a tarp or sheets of plastic in case of spilled paint).
  • If you want to update the fabric on a chair or couch, you will need sewing supplies and, of course, your new fabric.

After you have all of your supplies, you are ready to go! Use sandpaper to smooth out the surfaces of your furniture or to remove a previous paint or stain job. Unless your sanding work will be minimal, we recommend investing in an electric sander, which will make your job much easier. Make sure to clean off your furniture very well after sanding and before painting—sanding creates an incredible amount of dust! Grab that wood putty or filler to repair any cracks or dents in your furniture. After that dries, you are ready to paint or stain, and it will look good as new! If you are not sure where your furniture will eventually live and you need it to match any room in your home, go with a simple stain or paint the item black or white. For fabric repairs, use patches or just thread to repair tears or frays. Reupholstering fabric is more complicated—but still very doable!—and we recommend a step-by-step tutorial like this one. When you are finished with your project, you will be pleasantly surprised at the results and the weight of your wallet!
